庄子的哲学故事
Zhuangzi was a great thinker, philosopher, and writer of the Warring States Period. “Xiaoyaoyou” is one of his representative works. Here are two stories from it.
North Sea Has a Fish
Long time ago, there was a bird called Peng. Its back was as tall as Mount Tai. When it flew, its wings covered the sky like a blanket of clouds.
One day, the bird soared high into the sky and flew towards the South Sea. When its wings hit the surface of the water, the water went up three thousand li. When its wings flapped, they created a storm that went ninety thousand li. It would fly for half a year before it reached the South Sea.
Some little birds saw it. They couldn’t understand and even laughed at it. They said, “What does it think it is doing? When we fly up, we can only go a few metres before we come down again. How is it possible to cover a distance of ninety thousand li?”
As we can see, a person’s understanding is often limited by his or her ability.
The Story of Yuanchu and Owl
Hui Shi was a friend of Zhuangzi. After he became Prime Minister(宰相) of Wei, Zhuangzi wanted to pay him a visit. Someone told Hui Shi, “Zhuangzi is coming to Wei because he wants to replace you as Prime Minister.” Hui Shi was very afraid. He wanted to stop Zhuangzi and searched for him for three days.
Soon, Zhuangzi came. “Have you heard of a bird called Yuanchu in the south?” he asked Hui Shi. “Every time it flies, it will rest only on the wutong trees, eat only the bamboo fruits, and drink only the spring water that is as sweet as fine wine. Once, an owl caught a rotten(腐烂的) mouse. When Yuanchu flew past, the owl looked up and said, ‘Now!’ Now, are you telling me ‘now’ because you think I want to be Prime Minister of Wei?”
