Winter Solstice (冬至) falls between December 21 and December 23. On this day, the day is the shortest and the night is the longest in the year.
After this day, in many places of China, the weather becomes the coldest, which is called Shu Jiu in Chinese. In all, there are nine periods with nine days for each. In the first and second nine days, people keep their hands in pockets; in the third and fourth nine days, people can walk on ice; in the fifth and sixth nine days, people can see willows (柳树) along the river bank; in the seventh and eighth nine days, the swallow comes back and in the ninth nine days, the ox (牛) starts working.
Winter Solstice is an important festival. People eat Jiaozi in north China. Jiaozi is a necessary dish on this day no matter whether the family is poor or rich. And people in south China eat tangyuan and rice dumplings. In south China around Yangtze delta area, people often eat red bean glutinous rice (红豆糯米饭).
