[1] Detective Sgt.Ashley Jones works at the Avon and Somerset Police department in England.During his efforts to combat senior citizen loneliness,Jones realized that, with the rapid development of society, over 9 million people in the UK suffered from frequent or permanent loneliness, and 17% of elderly people had contact with friends and family members less than once per week.
[2] Loneliness is a serious social problem
that can contribute to depression as well as
crimes. The elderly people are so eager to
communicate with others that they fall victim
to cheaters.Suzanne who had been cheated of her money was a typical example.
[3] It was obvious that the cheater had
done his homework and found that Suzanne
was an old lady living alone, with barely any
visitors.Then,every morning,she would get a
call from a stranger who eventually convinced
her that he was her long lost friend. Then out
of sympathy, she lent him about f 31,000 as he
was poor and in desperate need.Even after
knowing she was cheated, she said that she
didn't actually mind being cheated, which made
Jones shocked,“ Otherwise,I would never
speak to another person for weeks on end," she
said.
[4] It bothered Jones for a long time.He
decided to do something about it.That's when
he made a significant discovery, which could
prevent it in a clever way.The solution was
chat benches−specially designated benches in
local parks that encouraged people to interact
and get to know each other.
[5] First Jones convinced the police
department to allow him to set up a couple of
“ chat benches ” in two of their local parks.
Then he hung a colorful sign on each of the
benches that read:“ HAPPY TO CHAT.Sit
here if you don't mind someone stopping to say
hello."

六成文:
Fantastically, it began to gain attention. Just a few days after the signs went up, Jones found the benches fully occupied by people with gray hair. They were sitting there and engaged in active and joyful conversations, faces beaming with sincere happiness. Their topics ranged from daily routines to their entertainment activities. Apparently, the benches became a safe platform where invisible social barrier that kept elderly people from saying hello was broken down. Most importantly, it prevents the elderly who are cut off from society falling victim to cheaters.
Therefore, the idea was catching on quickly. First, satisfied with the development of his idea, Jones set up more benches, mostly in places where senior citizens frequented. More cities were looking forward to copying his approach for combating loneliness. Shortly after, there were over 100 chat benches built throughout England, with hundreds under construction. Not only did the benches serve as an effective means to cut down crimes, but they also encouraged those of similar ages to interact and get to know each other, thus gaining a positive outcome.
