(奋斗精神) At six o'clock sharp the curtain rises at Southside Cultural Center, in Reno. An audience of 200, including the mayor of Reno, look at the stage(舞台). Dozens of actors begin the first number of The Lion King.
The gifted actors are made up of homeless children living at the Volunteers of America family shelter in Reno. The children have been given a chance to live their dreams onstage, thanks to volunteer acting coach Nasya Mancini. "I see so much of myself in these kids," says Nasya. "I tell them today's situation doesn't have to be their future life. If they are determined(有决心的), they can do anything they want. "
Determination is something Nasya knows all about. She was born in poor health and was given little chance of survival. But Nasya kept fighting. Her very name means "miracle" in Hebrew. Nasya was small, but quickly proved that her talents were as big as her will to survive. She started dancing at two. By six she'd been discovered by an acting coach, who encouraged her parents to sign her up for drama classes. "There was something about being onstage," Nasya says. "It made me come alive. " She decided that she was going to be an actor.
However, her love for acting didn't sit well with some of her schoolmates. They laughed at her, "You can't be an actress. You're not even pretty. " Nasya came home in tears. Her mother hugged her and told her to stop paying attention to it. By high school, Nasya was winning awards in theater competitions. She also provided community service by teaching drama to the children at the shelter. Nasya wanted the kids at the shelter to discover the confidence that acting could give. The best way to do that, she decided, was to put on a big play.
The production was a hit. The kids took several curtain calls. Donations(捐赠物) to the shelter poured in. Nasya reminds the kids of something she knows with every part of her spirit to be true: "Believe in yourself. The world is your stage. "
24. What was special about the play The Lion King?
A. It was staged at the local shelter. B. It stars Nasya Mancini.
C. It was performed by homeless kids. D. It received donations from society.
25. Which of the following best describes Nasya?
A. Talented and caring. B. Creative and positive.
C. Determined and funny. D. Confident and strict.
26. Why did Nasya decide to put on the play?
A. To collect public donations. B. To build the kids' confidence.
C. To win a local theater competition. D. To complete her community service.
27. What is the best title for the text?
A. Volunteers Make a Difference B. Rising from the Shelter to the Stage

In late 2017, photographer Norma Quintana was planning a trip to Puerto Rico to record Hurricane Maria's damage. Instead, she and her family found themselves caught in another natural disaster much closer to home. Beginning in early October, the Atlas Fire swept through Napa County and lasted weeks. When Quintana and her family were finally able to return to their home, everything was gone: her home, her studio, her photographs, her prints and her collection of over 100 cameras.
Ever an artist at heart, she began photographing the remains of her home and possessions(财物). Those photos would finally become a series, Forage From Fire. Now, the project can be viewed as part of Fire Transforms, a new show at the Palo Alto Art Center, which mainly explores the following themes: living with fire, learning with fire, and creating with fire. It invites about 19 artists, each thinking about wildfires through a different way. The collection includes photography, paintings, ceramics, sculptures, textiles and digital media.
One of the artists on the show is Linda Gass, who sewed a map of the damage from the 2013 Rim Fire, the largest recorded fire in the Sierra Nevada. Brian Fies' A Fire Story is a graphic(绘画的) novel and a description of the artist's losing his home in the 2017 Tubbs Fire, along with about 6,000 others. At the time, it was California's most catastrophic fire, though the Camp Fire in 2018 would be worse.
" Art offers a safe place of comfort after the firestorm has passed," says Rina Faletti, who is in charge of the activity. " How can we learn to change our fear, sadness, loss, anger and confusion into something more comforting and clear? How can we rest from climate(气候) change, even as we suffer the real losses that fire causes in the face of climate change? Thankfully, we have artists to help us. "
28. What happened to Quintana in October 2017?
A. She lost her family members forever.
B. She became a famous photographer.
C. Her home was destroyed by a fire.
D. Her trip was stopped by a hurricane.
29. What can be learned about Fire Transforms?
A. It mainly deals with six themes.
B. It is included in Forage From Fire.
C. It is a yearly activity at the Palo Alto Art Center.
D. It covers artworks showing artists' thoughts on fire.
30. What does the underlined word "catastrophic" mean in paragraph 3?
A. Disastrous. B. Normal. C. Strange. D. Confusing.
31. What does Faletti stress in the last paragraph?
A. The lasting losses caused by fire. B. The progress on controlling fire.
C. Art's role in fighting climate change. D. Artists' call to prevent climate change.

(创新精神) Who would have thought a teenager's mobile phone could help them manage their mental health by supporting a good night's sleep?
Sleep Ninja, a new free app aimed at teens aged between 12 and 16 and created by a mental health research organization, is showing strong early results in doing just that, both improving the hours of sleep and lessening depression(抑郁) and anxiety. "Teenagers struggle to get the recommended 8 to 10 hours of sleep each night," Dr Werner - Seidler said. " As a result, about 40 percent of all young people will have experienced a serious sleep problem by early high school which heightens their risk of mental ill - health. Sleep difficulties are a risk to mental health, and insomnia(失眠) is a sign of a number of disorders including depression and anxiety. "
Teenagers using Sleep Ninja arrange a time to be up in the morning to make it to school or other activities. From there, it works backwards, deciding when they should be in bed. The app gives an alarm to start a pre - bed routine(惯例), which starts at least an hour before bedtime. Part of that routine is to put the phone and other devices such as computers away, and do something more helpful to sleep. Some of this is simply to have a clear wind - down routine such as having a shower, brushing teeth, and reading a book. The app also offers a pattern to help them build sleep routines, things like how to set up their bedroom, what to do during the day to improve their chances of sleep and how to reduce those repeated bad thoughts that come in at night.
" During the experiment of Sleep Ninja, 90 percent of users showed at least some improvements in insomnia and 60 percent reported improvements in sleep quality," Dr Werner - Seidler said. "We also saw the percentage of depression drop from 77 percent at the start of the study to 44 percent after using the app. "
32. Why does the author ask a question in paragraph 1?
A. To give an example of sleep time.
B. To show his confusion over teenagers.
C. To introduce a new smartphone app.
D. To bring up the topic of mental health.
33. What can we infer from Werner - Seidler's words in paragraph 2?
A. Insomnia troubles more than half of young people.
B. Heavy schoolwork leads to teenagers' shortage of sleep.
C. 8 hours' sleep is not enough for high school students.
D. Insomnia puts teenagers in danger of depression.
34. What will the app advise you to do before bedtime?
A. Put down your book. B. Stop using your phone.
C. Clean your bedroom. D. Avoid repeated thoughts.
35. What does the last paragraph mainly talk about?
A. The influence of enough sleep. B. The good effects of Sleep Ninja.
C. The way to improve sleep quality. D. The advice on fighting depression.
