It's been a bit of a rough road for 65-year-old grandmother Dianne Gordon. Last February, her car broke down and she didn't have the financial(金融的) means to change it. For the past year, she has been walking nearly three miles each way to and from her job in a shop. Five days a week, rain or shine.
One cold day in January, Dianne was walking home from work when she decided to pop into the BP gas station to relax and grab a snack. As she was about to enter the store, something on the ground caught her attention. She couldn't believe her eyes. "I looked down and found a plastic bag with a lot of money in it," she said. Although the money would be life-changing for her, she didn't hesitate(犹豫). Dianne went inside, told the cashier, and immediately called the police.
Fortunately, it didn't take the police long to discover the owners: a young couple. They couldn't be more grateful to Dianne for her honesty. Dianne didn't think she did anything special. However, what she did encouraged the wife of one of the police officers, Stacy Connell, to step up and take action. Connell decided to start a GoFundMe campaign to raise money to buy Dianne a car. "I was hoping we could help her get a car since she could have walked into any auto shop and used that money," she said.
On February 7, thanks to nearly 3,000 donations(捐赠) totaling $82,675, Connell's hope became a reality. Dianne is now the proud owner of a brand new green Jeep Compass.
Now that she has a new car, the first on her list of things to do is driving to see her granddaughter's gymnastics competition, something she hasn't been able to do for over a year. (国际视野) Wimbledon High School carried out the Phone Away Box system over the summer holidays. Students arriving in September were now expected to place their phones in clear boxes on their lockers before morning registration, where they must remain till the bell rings at 4 p.m. It is the first school in the UK to use a system of this type.
Ben Turner, headmaster of Wimbledon High School, said, "School life doesn't end at the end of the school day any more, as it did during our childhoods. There is loads of evidence of the influence of phones on mental health. Children go home and continue to communicate with their school friends into the small hours. We felt like we needed to help our students make decisions that are right for them. We have talked a lot about the Phone Away Box with our students and their parents."
"The Phone Away boxes are for our year 7's and 8's and are housed in their locker room. It shows our policy of zero tolerance(容忍). It makes it very clear from the moment you come into school what our belief about phones should be. The school day is for normal socialisation, education, time in the classroom and time in clubs. It's not for whatever's on my phone. That is not important."
Turner added how the new Phone Away Box system is part of a wider policy of excluding(把……排除在外) phones from school. He said, "Our policy also goes beyond that. Our students also went away on trips for three days in the summer for mountaineering and rock climbing and during that time they were not allowed to bring their mobile phones with them." These measures(措施) are hugely popular with them and their parents. They express their thanks and have words of praise. It's clear that you don't need phones to get the best education.
28. What were the new students of Wimbledon High School asked to do?
A. Put phones in a fixed place at school. B. Avoid bringing their phones to school.
C. Register with a teacher in the morning. D. Keep their lockers closed until 4 p.m.
29. What was Ben Turner's purpose of saying that in paragraph 2?
A. To compare childhoods of different generations.
B. To share the advantages of the Phone Away Box system.
C. To introduce the after-school life of the kids in his school.
D. To explain reasons for using the Phone Away Box system.
30. What is the students' attitude towards the policy of excluding phones?
A. Doubtful. B. Supportive. C. Opposed. D. Uncertain.
31. What is the best title of the text?
A. Schools in the UK say no to unhealthy phone habits
B. The UK government developed a new policy on education
C. A school becomes first in the UK to lock phones up
D. Students' overuse of phones worries parents and schools

(思辨能力) As conditions change in US states such as Washington and California, trees such as the redwood may need to move — with the help of humans. Some of the trees do not do well when temperatures rise. Others suffer during dry times. The goal is to move the trees to areas where the weather conditions might be more suitable.
Forest scientists are generally in favor of moving the trees so they do not die out. However, not all of the scientists agree on the best way to do it. There are three ways to move trees: assisted population migration(迁移), assisted species migration and range expansion. Moving redwoods from California to Washington is an example of assisted species migration. Each way has different results for the trees and animals and insects(昆虫) that depend on the trees.
Michael Case is a forest expert at the Nature Conservancy in Washington. He said "there is a huge difference" among the different migration methods. Case is working on an assisted population migration program with Douglas fir and western hemlock trees. He is testing whether the trees from drier parts of the northwest can do well in western Washington. He and his organization believe that assisted population migration has fewer risks.
Douglas Tallamy, professor of wildlife ecology at the University of Delaware, has misgivings about assisted species migration. He said that some local insects might not eat the leaves of trees that are new to the area. These insects serve as food for birds and other animals, so they must have a good food source. However, the city of Portland, Oregon, is working on a species migration project for 11 tree species, including three oak trees. "Oak trees are among the most important in North America. When you move them elsewhere," he said, "the things that used to live on them can no longer make it."
32. What is paragraph 1 mainly about?
A. The risks faced by some trees in the US.
B. The special tree species native to the US.
C. The results of increased temperature.
D. The ways of environmental protection.
33. What did scientists disagree on about moving trees?
A. Its possible results. B. Its operation time.
C. Its locations. D. Its methods.
34. What can we infer about Michael Case from paragraph 3?
A. He considers 3 ways similar.
B. He may prefer assisted population migration.
C. He chose redwoods as subjects.
D. He thinks assisted population migration costly.
35. What does the underlined word "misgivings" probably mean in paragraph 4?
A. Impressions. B. Strategies. C. Worries. D. Requirements.
