C
With all the houses painted in bright colours making each street look like a rainbow, the Venetian Island town of Burano in Italy must be the most colourful in the world.
Burano’s traditional industry is fishing, which used to be its biggest business. As a result, there used to be lots of fishing boats sailing in and out of its harbour(港口) on fishing expeditions(远征). It is said that the population began painting their homes in bright colours so that the fishermen could see them even in thick fog after a sail at sea. Since then, the Italian town has kept up the tradition and continues to paint its houses in a huge variety of different colours.
Lumi Toma, a professional photographer, was amazed by the multi-coloured island as soon as she set foot on its shore. The 36-year-old said, “With the very first steps on the island, I immediately felt a burst of positive energy and a feeling of happiness grew in my heart. It ranks very highly in the world’s most colourful towns.”
According to the photographer, from Aosta in Northern Italy, the town’s unique look is actually the result of a strictly controlled colour plan. She said, “The houses follow a special colour pattern(式样), based on a specific system that has been in place since the village was founded.”
The incredible town is very proud of its brightly coloured heritage. Ms Toma said, “The people of Burano love their island and want to hold onto their culture, although life on the island is not easy. I imagine that living on a small island next to a famous place like Venice is both rewarding and difficult.”
