B(2025·舟山定海)
Dads have Father's Day. Mums have Mother's Day. Kids have Children's Day. However, do our grandparents have a special holiday? Yes, they do!
The Double Ninth Festival, also called the Chongyang Festival, is a special day for old people in China. The festival is on the ninth day of the ninth month in the traditional Chinese calendar. Its long history dates back to the Warring States Period(战国时期). At that time, it was only celebrated in the palace. From the Han Dynasty, it began to be popular among the common people. It was not officially set as a festival until the Tang Dynasty. In modern times, the festival has changed a little more. As the Chinese word for “nine” has the same sound as the word “jiu”, people take the Double Ninth Festival to show their wishes of long life for old people. In 1989, the Chinese government made the day as the Old People's Festival.
People celebrate the festival in many ways. On that day, families get together and climb mountains for good luck and in the hope that old people will live much longer and healthier. To celebrate it, they also enjoy autumn flowers, drink flower tea and wear a plant called *Zhuyu*. It is believed by people that *Zhuyu* can keep illness and bad luck away. Eating Chongyang cake is another tradition on the festival. There is no certain shape of the cake. But the one with nine layers(层)is the best. Nine layers means that people could do well in everything. The soft and sweet Double Ninth Cake is not only delicious but also carries people's wishes for their family members. Young people often prepare delicious cakes to share with old family members. The ways of celebrating the Double Ninth Festival have changed over time, but ______ stayed the same.
The festival stands for a tradition of respecting old people in China. That's because old people have rich knowledge and experience that young people can learn from. Besides, to respect the old people is to respect yourself tomorrow.
