C
One lazy afternoon in a library, I found a book called The Last Days of Old Beijing by the US writer Michael Meyer. The book caught my eye and made me think about my home city, Beijing, and its past.
Meyer's writing takes us back to Beijing about 20 years ago, In 2005, Meyer moved into Dashilan, one of Beijing's oldest neighbourhoods, on one of its hutongs. There he taught English at a local(当地的) school and lived with local people. This helped him to get close to the local culture. In the book, he describes the hutongs and the shouts of street sellers.
Meyer saw some of the great changes in this neighbourhood. The old houses made way for tall buildings, supermarkets and other modern(现代的) buildings. However, some parts of old Beijing's culture stay strong in the face of fast change. People still keep traditional activities like putting up Spring Festival couplets(对联) and eating traditional food on special days.
I was born in Beijing in the 2010s, so I know more about the city's modern side. Reading The Last Days of Old Beijing opened my eyes to new sides of the city. The life in the old neighbourhoods touched my heart. It made me think about how we can keep our traditional activities while also moving forward with changes.
