Ⅱ. 阅读表达【主题:人与社会 人物故事】
Dreaming with Clare Steven—the children's poet
Did you start to write poems because you were just bored, or because you didn't have any hobbies?
When I was about six, I was asked to read a poem to my class and I discovered two things. I liked the feel of words on my tongue and I liked it when people listened to me. Since then my main hobbies have always been reading, writing and acting. And sometimes I do all three at once. I write plays, poems and stories. I try to become different people and try to feel how they feel. And I don't have time to feel bored. But if I did, I'd read another book or write one.
What's your favourite place to write a poem?
I love writing in my garden and my house which is full of animal books and pictures. But the real answer is anywhere, anytime. I take my notebook with me wherever I go. Because you never know when a poem will come into your head.
Was being a poet your dream job?
I've had lots of interesting jobs. When I was a Saturday Girl in a hairdresser's, I heard some great stories. When I worked in a shoe shop, I found an idea for a story of my own. When I was a teacher, I worked in the library (Heaven!) and I had a book club for children. But being a poet is the best job of all, because I still can't believe I can do my favourite hobby and get paid for doing it!
Where do you get your ideas from?
I get them from life! My ideas usually come when I'm not trying to think about writing. For example, last week I found a yellow plastic car sitting next to my car at the supermarket. All alone. Looking really sad. I think that would make a great poem.
How old were you when you wrote your first poem?
The first poem I got into the school newspaper was when I was twelve years old. I was so pleased with myself that I wrote another one for the next newspaper. Then I couldn't stop. I just love writing stories and poems.
