If you have ever played in or watched a soccer game，you have seen the referee(裁判)points to players and holds up yellow or red cards. The referee uses these coloured cards to show an offense(犯规)by the player. The referee does not have to use language. The colour of the card shows the result.
This system is based on the traffic light. The yellow colour on a traffic light means being careful and the red colour means stop. In soccer，a yellow card refers to a warning to a player. A red card means that a player is out and the player must leave the field immediately and may not return to play in the game. But for what reasons are red and yellow cards used in soccer?
This card system was first used in 1970. During the quarter-final of the 1966 World Cup，the UK was playing Argentina. Two players on Britain team had been pointed serious offense by the referee. One of Argentina's players was sent off the field. However，the referee did not make these calls clear during the game. Some people at the game didn't even realise what had happened until they read reports about the calls in the newspaper later. There was no system in place to announce(宣布)the calls during the match. Often in a match，the officials and the players were the only ones that knew about a call.
A British referee who was at the 1966 game thought a better system was needed to make the teams and everyone clearly know about calls as they happened. He also wanted a system that did not use language，because soccer players came from countries around the world. He created the red and yellow card system on the traffic light. This system worked so well that other sports also used it.
