Ⅳ.阅读理解
John and Jeff were twins. They were planning a special gift for Mother's Day. How pleased and proud Mother would be when they brought her breakfast in bed! They planned to make French toast and chicken porridge. They thought they knew exactly how to cook them because they had watched their mother do that before.
Finally the big day came. The clock rang at 6 am,and the twins went downstairs quietly to the kitchen. To boil the porridge first, they put some rice into the water and then left it to boil when they made the toast. Jeff broke two eggs and added in some milk. John put two pieces of bread into the egg mixture. Next,Jeff fried the bread with the frying pan(煎锅). Everything was going smoothly. But soon the pan got so hot that the bread turned black. John had to put in another piece of bread.
Then John noticed the porridge in the pot was boiling over. He was afraid. Thankfully,Jeff stayed calm and turned off the fire in time. They cleaned up the mess, and then continued to cook the porridge. But Jeff's hand touched the hot burner and he gave a cry of pain. John made him put his hand in the cold water. Then they found the bread in the pan turned black again.
As the twins looked around in disappointment, their father appeared. Father's appearing made the children jump up as high as a hungry kangaroo, which had just found plenty of fresh grass. They became excited and started all over once more. They made the bread and cooked porridge with their father's guidance. Father helped them adjust the fire. Everything was fine this time. Delicious breakfast was ready. How happy they were!
The twins carried the breakfast upstairs. When their mother saw the delicious breakfast, she was really surprised and moved. She had never expected the children could cook a breakfast, which not only was a gift, but also meant the children's love for her. The children said loudly,“Happy Mother's Day!” Mother hugged them tightly and kissed them again and again.
