The Louvre is one of the largest museums in the world, with a total area of over 60 acres, including 782,910 square feet of exhibition rooms. Philip Augustus built the Louvre as a fortress(堡垒) just outside the city walls in the 12th century to protect Paris from being attacked.
The Louvre didn't become a palace until the 16th century under Francis I, who broke the tower and added two new wings. Later that century, Catherine de' Medici had her own palace built in the Tuileries, which Henry IV joined to the Louvre to form a monumental(作为纪念的) double palace.
The Louvre began its first step toward becoming a museum in the 18th century, when the abandoned(废弃的) palace developed as an artists' living place and academy with public exhibitions of the important collections. It was officially seen as a museum in 1793.
