Gui Haichao is a university teacher who loves space and dreams of flying there. His dream has been achieved now. He performed his first space journey on the Shenzhou XVI spaceship. Gui has become the first Chinese payload specialist (载荷专家) to enter space. During the task, he managed the payload for space science experiment.
Gui grew up in a common family in southeast China's Yunnan Province. After he heard the news of Yang Liwei's historic spaceflight for China in 2003, his interest in aerospace began at the age of 17. When he found that China needed its first group of payload specialists in 2018, he applied for the position right away.
In order to be a good astronaut, Gui had to go through hard training like other astronauts. The training was difficult for him at first because he felt sick sometimes. But he didn't give up. He added more exercises, asked for advice from others and used some of the training methods used by pilots. Thanks to his hard work, Gui progressed rapidly in every training course and was chosen for the Shenzhou XVI journey.
Gui said he felt lucky and honored to become the first Chinese payload specialist to fly in space. He also took pride in his team. “I am sure that with Jing Haipeng's guidance and other member's close cooperation, we will successfully perform our duties. We will make our efforts to do something for the great ‘New Era (时代)’ and meet the expectations of the Party and the people,” Gui said.
