Believe in yourself,let courage rise,
Through every challenge,open new skies.

The guitar is one of the most popular musical instruments in the world. Many different cultures have played instruments like the guitar for over 3,000 years. The oldest instrument that we can see today comes from Ancient Egypt. You can see this guitar in a museum in Cairo. It belonged to a singer who sang for the Egyptian queen Hatshepsut. This type of guitar had a long neck and only three strings(弦).
The lute is also an ancient instrument similar to a guitar, but it has a short neck and a body like half a pear. It usually had more strings than a guitar and they were in pairs. From 1100 to 1500,traveling singers and story tellers played the lute to go with their songs.
Guitars sometimes had pairs of strings like the lute, but the guitar changed over time to use single strings. People used guitars with six single strings for the first time in the 1600s in Italy, but the most important change happened in the 1850s. The Spanish guitar maker Antonio Torres Jurado made the guitar's body bigger. His idea made the sound of the guitar louder and better. Most of today's classical guitars follow his design.
The first electric guitars appeared in the 1930s. The electric guitars have a solid body and can make many different sounds. We also find them in many different shapes and sizes. Some electric guitars don't look like guitars at all!

题目:72岁老人挑战铁人三项 体裁:记叙文 难度:4星 建议用时:8分钟 正确率:/4
(2024·包头中考改编)Rain or shine,Peter O'Neill always competes(竞争者) in the triathlon(铁人三项运动) of his town. The 72-year-old has competed in every triathlon in the event's 40-year history. He was part of the group that came up with the idea in the 1980s.
“I used to jog around town,” Mr. O'Neill said. “I came into contact with(接触) an Olympian,David Power, and Dave had a hotel up here. A few of us got together and we discussed it and got it going in October,1983.”
Then the 31-year-old suggested one of the group should compete. “Everyone else could either ride a bike or run,but I was the only one who could swim,” he laughed. “But I was happy to give it a go.”
In the beginning,more than 220 athletes took part in the event,including 79 individual competitors(竞争者) and 48 teams. These days it's a five-day festival—which includes 11 events in all—with more than 13,000 competitors.
Rebecca van Pooss, the head of operations for the triathlon there, said the event Mr. O'Neill helped to start was now an international event. “It is the world's largest Olympic-distance triathlon,” she said. “That's something we're very proud of.”
“Mr. O'Neill's efforts were inspiring. There are a couple of other athletes who have done 38,39,” she said. “But Peter,he is the legend(传奇)—it's pretty amazing to have someone who's done all 40 of our races.”
Mr. O'Neill trains year-round for the event, and enjoys the social side just as much as the physical benefits(身体益处). “I've made so many friends ... friends that I ride with and friends I swim with—it's been wonderful,” he said. “When you're in your 70s like I am,you're quite happy to just do it because you know it beats the alternative(替代品),which is sitting around doing nothing.”
( )1. What do the underlined words “give it a go” in Paragraph 3 Probably mean?
A. Try doing it. B. Cooperate with others.
C. Organize the game. D. Go to a friend's home.
( )2. What can we infer from Rebecca's words?
A. The athletes are mostly in their 30s.
B. There are more than 40 events that they can choose.
C. The triathlon will be an international event in the future.
D. It's very hard to keep on training and competing for the event.
( )3. What can we know from Mr. O'Neill's story?
A. He is too old to be an athlete.
B. He beats “doing nothing”,and becomes a legend.
C. He helps many people in his hometown to find jobs.
D. He has won many gold medals at the Olympic Games.
( )4. In which section of a newspaper may this passage appear?
A. Fashion and Style. B. School and Education.
C. Science and Technology. D. Sports and Fitness.

文化意识 Many people may throw away the pits(核) inside fruits after eating them, but inheritors(传承人) of nut carving have turned them into artworks instead.
Weifang nut carving goes back to the Qing Dynasty. During that time,an old imperial craftsman(手艺人) Wang Dayan spread the skill to the people in Shandong Province. Craftsmen at that time often used peach pits to show off their artistic skills. Because of the high level of carving skills needed, the traditional culture, and its rich artistic theme,Weifang nut carving was listed as a national intangible cultural heritage in 2008.
“One nut, from 0.8 to 6 centimeters long, can be made into fan pendants, earrings, buttons, seals, and so on,” said Tan Wanhai,48,an inheritor of Weifang nut carving. Tan has studied the art of nut carving for 25 years and has created many nut carvings.
However, the craftsman also said that bringing this kind of artwork to life is not easy. “Unlike some pits like olive pits which have a plane surface, each peach pit has its own special texture(纹理) like human fingerprints,” Tan said, adding that craftsmen have to study each peach pit to carefully plan out their artwork.
Nut carving craftsmen also need to have knowledge(知识) in many areas. According to Tan,they have to learn skills in painting, seal carving, and calligraphy from many traditional cultures.
Thanks to their creative design and fresh ideas,Weifang nut carving artworks have been more and more welcomed by people in China. More people are learning the art and have even become inheritors to pass down the skill to young people.
“Now,the number of inheritors is about 1,000. But I believe it could be bigger. More craftsmen now give up the tradition of passing down the skill only through the family and open it up to anyone who is interested in learning the skill,” said Tan.
