Supermarket Albert Heijn in the Netherlands has introduced a weekly “quiet hour” for people with autism(自闭症).
People with autism have trouble processing much information in a noisy environment. For those people, noise and light will be kept to a minimum(最小值) in Supermarket Albert Heijn on Tuesday mornings.
The idea comes from Britain. In Britain, supermarkets such as Tesco and Morrisons already have a similar service for people with autism. According to a survey by autism organization NVA, shoppers with autism are mostly troubled by supermarket noises such as loud background music, the sudden appearance(出现) of a group of goods and goods that weren’t lined up properly on the shelves.
Supermarket assistant - manager Eva Mennes came up with the idea for her supermarket. She said it is the first Dutch supermarket to introduce a “quiet hour”. “We chose Tuesday morning because there is little work to be done and there is less noise,” she said. “Instead of asking ‘Do you have your bonus(奖金) card?’, we ask ‘Can I have your bonus card?’ at the check - out.”
This change is all about trying to make it a nice experience for those with autism. But there is still much to do. According to NVA ambassador Jasper Wagteveld, shopping is still a challenge. “There are so many goods to choose from. I will completely lose myself if my wife doesn’t tell me what meat, drinks or vegetables to get.”
( )1. What is the purpose of a weekly “quiet hour” in the supermarket?
A. To do no work and make no noise on Tuesday mornings.
B. To provide a nice shopping environment for people with autism.
C. To keep supermarket workers away from the busy work and give them a holiday.
D. To help shoppers with autism find what they need quietly.
( )2. Which of the following won’t cause trouble to shoppers with autism?
A. Too much light in the supermarket.
B. Loud background music in the supermarket.
C. Goods lined up tidily on the shelves.
D. The sudden appearance of a group of goods.
( )3. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?
A. Supermarket Tesco cuts down noise on Tuesday evenings for people with autism.
B. The Netherlands is the first country to come up with the idea of a weekly “quiet hour”.
C. Supermarket Albert Heijn is the first Dutch supermarket to introduce a “quiet hour”.
D. Tuesday morning is chosen because workers don’t make any noise on that day.
( )4. What can be learned about Jasper Wagteveld from the last paragraph?
A. He has no problem with shopping now.
B. He feels that nothing has changed to his shopping experience.
C. Both he and his wife have the problem of autism.
D. He can easily feel lost in front of lots of goods.

Lots of snakes were washed onto the riverbank after the flood. Seeing these snakes getting burnt by the sun, teenaged Jadav Payeng was worried: What if this happens to people?
Payeng turned his fears into planting a 550 - hectare(公顷) forest in Majuli, Assam, India—one tree at a time. “I started planting trees in 1979. The elders told me if I wanted to prevent snakes from dying, I should plant the world’s tallest grass. I didn’t know then they meant bamboo. They gave me 50 bamboo seeds and 25 young trees, and that was how this began.”
Payeng knew that simply planting them didn’t mean it would come up and grow. The bamboo plants needed water. “I bought 50 pots(罐子), made holes in each and used them to water the plants. I would fill them up every five days.”
Soon, he was collecting seeds from the locals and planting them. “I have to thank all the help I have got from my village. The elders are so close to nature, and have so much knowledge. When I had difficulty keeping my trees healthy, they told me that red ants can help. This is the kind of useful knowledge we need to pass on to our young.”
Every day before the sun rises, Payeng (62 years old now) sets out for his forest. The forest is home to different plants and animals, including 1,000 deer, several kinds of birds and leopards. It’s also a cover for rhinos during the yearly floods and an elephant corridor(通道).
Payeng is now working on a 200 - hectare green cover, a project he started in 2011, with the help of the government. “This will be done in 20 years,” he says.
( )1. What inspired(启发) Payeng to start planting trees?
A. The floods.
B. The burnt snakes.
C. The riverbanks.
D. The bamboo trees.
( )2. What does the underlined word “them” in Paragraph 3 refer to?
A. The holes.
B. The seeds.
C. The pots.
D. The plants.
( )3. In what way did the villagers help Payeng?
A. They took care of his children.
B. They helped him water the plants.
C. They collected and raised red ants.
D. They gave him seeds and young trees.
( )4. What’s the text mainly about?
A. A man who grew a forest.
B. A village with wise elders.
C. A project which lasts 20 years.
D. A forest for different animals.

思维品质①Most people who use social robots know that they are not real lives. Yet they still talk to or care for robots as if they were. People often give names to their lovely cleaning machines, such as Roomba, and may treat them almost like family pets.
②IRobot, the company that makes Roomba, often gets calls from people whose robots need repairs. The company would offer to send out a brand - new one. Yet most people said, “No, I want my Roomba.” In Japan, some people even hold funerals for AIBO robot dogs after they stop working.
③Clearly, some people are forming relationships with robots. This can be a problem if one neglects(忽视) his relationships with people and spends more time with a machine. Some people play video games or look at social media too much. It’s also costly to develop and build social robots. Not everyone can afford one.
④But relating to robots can have its benefits(益处). Other people won’t always be available when we need them. Especially when we can’t be with our loved ones, how difficult and lonely we are! Social robots might be better than no one.
⑤Robots can’t understand what people are saying or going through, so they can’t empathize(感同身受). But they don’t really have to. People talk to their pets even though the animals don’t really understand their words. The animal may react with a wagging tail(摇尾巴), and that is often enough. Robots play a similar role.
⑥Similarly, robot hugs will never feel the same as actually hugging a loved one. However, these hugs do have some upsides. Asking for a hug from someone, especially someone who’s not a very close friend or family member, we may feel awkward(尴尬的). A robot, however, “is just there to help you,” says Block, a robot scientist. It can’t care about you—but it also can’t turn you down.
⑦The same goes for chatting with robots. People with social anxiety(焦虑) may not feel comfortable talking to others. Technology, including robots, can help them open up.
⑧“Robots could be like a friend,” Block says, “but also like a toy and like a tool.”
