Spending time with dogs can help us feel better. But now scientists have found that our furry friends are more in touch with human emotions(情感) than we thought. Researchers found that dogs are able to tell the difference when people are stressed. The study could help to teach therapy(治疗) dogs, which are trained to give people emotional support.
Apes Have Good Manners
Just as humans say “hello” and “goodbye” to each other before and after get-together, some apes also use signals (信号) to start and end their social communication. According to a recent study, some apes exchange a look or make a certain noise to begin and end activities like playing. To break the ice, they sometimes butt heads, touch each other, or hold hands before they start the activities.
Dolphins May Use Medicine
Dolphins sometimes have skin disease(皮肤病)—a problem that seems to be getting worse as sea water gets warmer. Luckily, they’ve found their own way of treating(治疗) it—dolphins often rub themselves on certain kinds of coral. The coral they choose to rub on may have medical effects in treating skin disease.

The Oscar-winning short film Learning to Skateboard in a Warzone (If You’re a Girl) lets more people know Skateistan. It is an NGO(非政府组织) and it teaches skateboarding.
The story of Skateistan began in 2007 when Australian skateboarder Oliver Percovich arrived in Afghanistan. He wanted to start an organization to give young people in Afghanistan a colorful life. Then Skateistan was born. It provides safe spaces for certain groups who are often excluded from sports and educational opportunities(机会), especially girls, children living with disabilities, and those from poor families.
At first, Skateistan often ran skate classes at different places in Kabul, including an orphanage(孤儿院). For the first time, girls started coming to skate, though most Afghan girls weren’t allowed to play sports. In 2009, Skateistan’s first Skate School opened its doors in Kabul. It was Afghanistan’s largest indoor sports building, and it has classrooms.
Moreover, Skateistan has developed several other programs. The Skate and Create program offers classes for students to learn about topics such as human rights, cultural studies, and the environment. The Youth Leadership program helps students become leaders of a better world. As only 13% of Afghan women know how to read and write, a program called Back-to-school helps students sign up for the public school system(公立学校系统). “My daughter is my hope for the bright future of Afghanistan,” said Samira, the mother of a former(从前的) Back-to-school student. And Skateistan students continue to help the organization as they grow up: Over 70% of the workers there are its former students.
In 2012, Skateistan opened its first Skate School outside of Afghanistan. It builds a skate park with classrooms in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, and later another one opened in central Johannesburg, South Africa.
“Skateistan is not just about skating. It’s about giving people life skills and hope for their future,” said Tony Hawk, one of the top skateboarders in the world.
( )1. Which of the following is NOT the purpose of Skateistan?
A. To teach young people in Afghanistan skateboarding.
B. To give poor kids hope for a bright future.
C. To make the world’s largest indoor sports building.
D. To help Afghan girls get educational opportunities.
( )2. The underlined phrase “excluded from” in Paragraph 2 is the closest in meaning to “________”.
A. included in B. left out C. provided with D. hurt by
( )3. A student can join ________ if he or she wants to learn something about Afghan history.
A. the Back-to-school program B. the Skate and Create program
C. the Youth Leadership program D. both A and B
( )4. Which of the following is NOT true according to the passage?
A. Most Afghan women are illiterate(文盲的) and they are unable to go to school.
B. It was still difficult for girls in Afghanistan to play sports even if Skateistan was born.
C. Most of the workers in Skateistan, like Tony Hawk, are the top skateboarders in the world.
D. The second Skate School opened outside of Afghanistan by Skateistan is in central Johannesburg.

题目:熟能生巧? 体裁:议论文 难度:4星 建议用时:8分钟 正确率:/4
思维品质 “Practice makes perfect.” is a very popular expression. But can we take this saying correctly?
One popular view is that if a person practices for at least 10,000 hours, he or she will reach “perfection”, or in other words, become an expert in a field. It was given by Malcolm Gladwell in his best-selling book, Outliers:The Story of Success. He gave the examples of the music group The Beatles and Microsoft co-creator Bill Gates, who clearly put in over 10,000 hours of practice before they became successful.
However, Gladwell’s book has been said by many to be too simplistic and generalizing(概括). Anders Ericsson argued that 10,000 hours was just an average figure. Some people may need fewer than 10, 000 hours and others may need more. He also said that practicing a lot was not enough, the type and quality of practice also made a difference. Most importantly, he mentioned the importance of “deliberate(刻意的) practice”. When a person practices a specific part of a skill in depth rather than as a whole, it’ll be much more effective(有效的), though it’s tiring.
Many other studies argue that practice alone is far from enough. In fact, a more recent study from Princeton University stated that practice only accounted for up to 26% of reaching an expert level. Many other factors(因素) such as IQ, personality, attitude, and starting age can also counted. Natural talent is an important factor, especially in sports. For example, many baseball players in America with amazing vision can see the ball much sooner than others do. Success also depends on social factors, environmental factors, and even just being in the right place at the right time!
In conclusion, practice may not make perfect, but deliberate practice has been shown to lead us to improvement.
( )1. What does the underlined word “It” in Paragraph 2 refer to(指代)?
A. The view. B. The word. C. The book. D. The field.
( )2. 新考法 观点态度 What is Anders Ericsson’s attitude(态度) to Gladwell’s view on practice?
A. Amazed. B. Worried. C. Hopeful. D. Doubtful.
( )3. Which of the following is especially important in sports according to Princeton University’s study?
A. IQ. B. Personality. C. Natural talent. D. Starting age.
( )4. Which of the following will the author most probably agree with?
A. Practice makes better. B. Rome was not built in a day.
C. Every man has his price. D. A good beginning is half done.

Recently, “college students going to Zibo for barbecue(烧烤)” and “taking a high-speed train to taste Zibo barbecue” have become hot topics online in China. Zibo barbecue offers a distinctive dining experience. On each table is a small oven. People can cook skewers themselves and then put them in a thin pancake, usually with a spring onion inside. The experience makes “Zibo barbecue” quite different from other kinds of barbecue.
Data(数据) showed that bookings for hotels in Zibo during the five-day Labor Day holiday were 800 percent higher than that in 2019. The number of passengers arriving and leaving through Zibo railway station has reached 50,000 a day, setting a record in the past three years, with most of them being tourists who come to taste Zibo barbecue.
The Zibo government has caught the chance to attract(吸引) more tourists. As early as March 10, it has set up prizes for barbecue shops that are popular among tourists, founded a barbecue organization, and posted the opening of a barbecue festival during the Labor Day holiday. In order to encourage people to visit the city, Zibo offered a special “barbecue map”, and added 21 new barbecue bus lines, so that tourists can “get on the bus to rest, get off to eat”.
“Barbecue and tourism may not have too much influence on stimulating the economy(刺激经济), but this is a chance for more people to get to know Zibo’s warm welcome and business environment, which will attract more investment and create more jobs. This is what really matters,” Wang Dazhuang, a Zibo citizen, said. At present, the biggest problem is that the number of passengers is so big for this city that many owners of barbecue restaurants are trying to make their barbecue business large, according to an owner of a barbecue restaurant.
( )1. What does the underlined word “distinctive” in the first paragraph mean?
A. Great. B. Special. C. Delicious. D. Relaxing.
( )2. What does the data show in Paragraph 2?
A. Barbecue has become the symbol of Zibo.
B. Not many people went to Zibo until recently.
C. Zibo is often crowded during the Labor Day holiday.
D. Zibo has a tourism growth because of Zibo barbecue.
( )3. What does the third paragraph mainly tell us about?
A. When is the best time to taste Zibo barbecue.
B. How Zibo has tried to develop the city tourism.
C. Why Zibo becomes so popular on the Internet so quickly.
D. Where visitors can taste the most delicious barbecue in Zibo.
( )4. 新考法 观点态度 What is Wang Dazhuang’s attitude(态度) to the popularity of Zibo barbecue?
