Anyone can be an inventor—even kids! Chester Greenwood was freezing. It was March of 1873 and Chester was testing out a new pair of ice skates. The 15-year-old was getting sad because his ears were cold. So he decided to find a way to keep them warm. He tried wrapping (包裹) a scarf around his head but it was too heavy and not comfortable. Besides, who can skate with a scarf tied around their head? To solve his problem, Chester made two ear-shaped rings from wire(电线) and asked his grandmother to sew(缝) fur on one side of the circles and soft cloth on the other side. Chester called his new invention ear protectors.
After that, he improved his invention with a steel band(带子) and tiny chains(链条) so it would fit in pockets. Four years later, Chester opened his own factory—Greenwood's Ear Protectors Factory. Then, the ear protectors got a new name—earmuffs.

Chester was born in Maine, a town of Farmington.
Chester invented many products during his lifetime, such as a teakettle that didn't tip over, the spring steel rack, a mousetrap and a folding bed. He was named one of America's 15 outstanding inventors.
