话题:竹子 难度:★★★ 建议用时:9'
Many people think bamboo is a tree. But it is not—it is a kind of grass. There are over 1,200 different kinds of bamboo. It grows mainly in East and Southeast Asia. It also grows in Latin America, India and parts of Africa and Australia. People all over the world use it.
People in the past used bamboo for many things. They made musical instruments and weapons (武器) from bamboo. They used it to make paintbrushes and paper. Fishermen used it to make tools for catching fish. Some people even made boats from bamboo!
In China and India, doctors use bamboo in traditional medicine. Bamboo is also very useful for cooking. People put food inside the hollow (中空的) bamboo stalks. This makes a good container (容器) for cooking soup, rice or tea. People also eat bamboo as a healthy food. Most Asian countries have special dishes made from bamboo shoots.
There are many modern uses for bamboo. In 1879, Thomas Edison made the first light bulb (灯泡). He made it with bamboo! People also use bamboo to make beautiful cloth. It is even in some machines to clean water! Bamboo is truly an amazing plant!
These are just a few of the many ways people use bamboo. But bamboo is useful for a much more important reason. It is useful while it grows! Growing bamboo helps the environment in many ways. Bamboo makes the air clean and it does this more quickly than trees. Bamboo also provides shade and shelter from the sun. Bamboo grows fast, with some species (种类) able to grow as much as 60 centimetres in just one day. It reaches its full height in only three to four months. However, bamboo isn’t ready to use until it matures (成熟) and hardens, which takes about three years. This is much faster than many other plants, which take much longer to be ready.
