Hello, kids! Today,we are going to talk about a special day in China called the Double Ninth Festival. It's on the ninth day of the ninth month in the Chinese lunar calendar every year. That's why it's called “Double Ninth”. This festival is also known as the Chongyang Festival. Let's learn about the old stories that tell us how this festival started.
The story of Huan Jing
Legends (传说) have it that a long time ago,in the Han Dynasty, there was a bad demon that brought sickness to people. A brave young man named Huan Jing wanted to help his friends and family. So he learnt how to fight from the gods and got ready to fight the demon.
The gods told Huan Jing that the demon would come back on the ninth day of the ninth month. So,Huan Jing took everyone to a mountain and showed them how to use the smell of chrysanthemum (菊花) wine and cornels (茱萸) to keep the demon away. When the demon came, the smell made him sick, and Huan Jing was able to defeat him.
The lucky family
Another story is about a family that lived at the bottom of a mountain. A wise man came to their house one day and asked to stay with them. They were very kind and gave him a nice meal and a place to sleep.
Before he left, the wise man told the family to go up the mountain on the ninth day of the ninth month and not to come back until noon. The family did what he said and took some chrysanthemum wine and cakes with them.
When it was noon,a big flood came and destroyed all the houses in the valley. The family was safe on the mountain and realised that the wise man had saved their lives.
These stories have been told for many years and are an important part of our traditions. Today, the Double Ninth Festival also has a new meaning. In 1989,the Chinese government made it a day to respect and care for old people. The name “Double Ninth” sounds like words that mean “long life” in Chinese,so it's a wish for all old people to have a long and healthy life.
