B
I’ve always been a big fan of the Olympics. I used to have a favourite “star” in every sport, but I’ve learnt that these stars can fade away with time. However, in Paris, I found a true hero.
Meet Ni Xialian, a table tennis player in her 60s. She’s the oldest in her sport and still plays like a champion. Even though she’s older, she doesn’t feel out of place. She moves gracefully and jumps with energy, just like the young players.
Ni used to be a world champion from China, but now she plays for Luxembourg. She showed her best against a young player from China, Sun Yingsha, who is in her 20s and made it to the top 16 players.
Ni lost the match, but she was happy. She thanked the crowd and said that her dream of playing in the Olympics again had come true. She also played with the world’s best.
Before her match, Ni helped Sun and another player, Wang Chuqin, practise, because Ni’s technique is similar to the players who they were going to play against. They later won the mixed doubles championship. During the match, the commentators (解说员) called Ni “Master Ni” to show respect for her. They remembered how she helped China’s table tennis when she was at her best and how she still works hard to make the sport popular.
Even though Ni doesn’t play for China anymore, she still has the love of the country. I believe she will always be remembered by China and by sports fans everywhere.
I love the slogan of the Paris Olympics: Games Wide Open. It means that everyone who has the Olympic spirit is welcomed, no matter what they do or how they play.
