Florence Chia-ying Yeh,also known as Ye Jiaying,is a well-known scholar of classical Chinese literature (中国古典文学学者). She passed away at the age of 100 in 2024. Ye Jiaying was famous for creating, researching,and teaching Chinese poetry both in China and abroad.
Ye Jiaying once lectured (讲授) at overseas institutions like Harvard University and the University of British Columbia. In 1990,she became an academician (会员) of the Royal Society of Canada (加拿大皇家学会). In college,she studied Tang and Song dynasty poetry with the renowned Chinese literature master Gu Sui, who greatly influenced her understanding of poetry,her attitude on life and her teaching style.
In the 1950s and 1960s, she taught at universities in Taiwan. Then, she moved to Canada in 1969. In 1979,she started giving free lectures in the Chinese mainland during the holidays, travelling at her own expense. In 2018 and 2019,she donated all her money,about 35. 68 million yuan,to Nankai University,where she worked for a large part of her life. She was given the "Touching China" award in 2020.
At her 90s, she picked 218 old poems for kids and made videos to explain and read them. Even at 96,she gave lectures at Nankai University,sitting in a wheelchair. Those who listened to her lectures said she made poetry easy to understand and guided students to learn step by step.
