Poverty(贫困)was a big problem around the world.But China has done a good job of
dealing with it and it has found its own way to fight poverty.Instead of just giving money to
poor people,it has tried to educate people and give them the tools they need to lift
themselves out of poverty.Ordinary(普通的)people play a big role in the fight.Here are
two of them.
Zhang Gui mei has been helping girls pursue(追求)education since she travelled to
Yunnan at the age of 17.As a teacher,Zhang was heartbroken when she saw her students
quit school after finishing senior high school.They couldn't go to college because their
families couldn't afford it.So in 2008,Zhang started a free school for poor girls.Since t then,
Zhang has been busy asking for donations to provide money for the school.She has
convinced parents to send their daughters back to school.The school has sent more than
1,800 students to universities and colleges.
Huang Wen xi u is one of the role models of the times.A TV play The Daughter of
the Mountain tells us her story.It has received lots of praise from viewers.
When Huang was in college,the idea of serving her home town occured(产生)to her.
After graduating from Beijing Normal University,Huang moved back to Baise,her home
town.She said,“ I grew up in a mountainous area where quite a number of people live in
poverty.And all I wish is to do my part to change their lives."
But Huang soon found that her job was not easy.She had been concerned(担心)
about the village development for a long time.It took her two months just to visit the 195
poor families through the village.
Huang encouraged villagers to plant citrus(柑橘),and she helped them learn about
how to sell their products online.Thanks to Huang's hard work,418 villagers finally broke
away from poverty..
But sadly,on 17 th June 2019,Huang lost her life at the age of 30 because of a flash
flood(暴洪).
Although she passed away,the mountains and rivers there will not forget her,and the
people there will not forget her.
