In 2024,two more places in China were added to World Heritage List (世界遗产名录). These places are very special and important for nature. They are the Badain Jaran Desert—Towers of Sand and Lakes and the Migratory Bird Sanctuaries along the Coast of Yellow Sea-Bohai Gulf of China.
The Badain Jaran Desert—Towers of Sand and Lakes
The Badain Jaran Desert is a very big place, covering about 47,000 square kilometres. It has the world's largest “singing” sand dunes (沙丘). You can hear a loud sound when you stand near them. People used to think this sound was made by ghosts, but in fact,it's because the sand grains move and bump into each other. Dotted (星罗棋布于) along these great dunes are more than 140 lakes. The hot sun makes the lake water evaporate (蒸发),leaving many of these lakes salty. Microorganisms (微生物) and minerals cause the lakes to have bright colours, making them look like jewels in the sun.
The Migratory Bird Sanctuaries along the Coast of Yellow Sea-Bohai Gulf of China
The Migratory Bird Sanctuaries are important for birds because birds can rest, breed, and stay warm in these places in winter. They are a part of a key migratory route which birds fly along, from the Arctic to Southeast Asia and Australasia (澳大拉西亚). “These places help fight against climate change,” said Martin Harper,CEO of BirdLife International.
Now,with these two new places,China has 15 World Natural Heritage sites, which is more than any other country.
