Subodhi calmed down. “You’re happy?”
“Yes,” said the monkey. “I love learning from you. ”
“Wukong, you have been here for a long time. What would you like to learn from me?” asked Subodhi.
Wukong shrugged(耸肩). “I don’t know. You tell me what I should learn. ”
“Well,” said Subodhi,“I can teach you how to tell the future. Would you like that?”
“Maybe,” said Wukong. “Will it make me live forever?”
“Of course not,” said Subodhi.
“Then forget it,” said Wukong. “Teach me something else. ”
“Hmm,” said Subodhi. “How about some magic breathing exercises?”
“Will they make me live forever?” asked Wukong.
“No,” said Subodhi,frowning(皱眉).
“Then I’m not interested,” said Wukong.

①You may have heard of the saying “Talking to yourself is the first sign of madness”, right? But who hasn’t done that?
②We did a lot of it when we were young. Take a trip to any preschool and watch a small child playing with toys. You are very likely to hear her talking to herself. It’s the language that is spoken aloud but only to the self.
③However,as we grow older,it just becomes part of the way we think. We always do it in silence in our mind.
④In fact, talking to ourselves, whether aloud or silently in our heads,is a valuable tool for thought. And it allows us to plan what we are going to do,manage our activities and even create something great. Studies have shown that it can make us be better at dealing with many tasks, and it can also give us a useful way to think about our actions.
⑤Self-talk can be encouraging. One recent study suggested that self-talk is the most helpful when we use “you” instead of “I”. For example, before a sports game, some athletes may encourage themselves by using self-talk like “You can do it”. Andy Murray won his 2012 US Open victory partly thanks to the self-talk he gave himself in front of a changing-room mirror.
⑥Self-talk might be one of the keys to human creativity. Talking to ourselves sometimes means asking questions and providing answers. It seems to be a good way of solving problems. When we do this,we can think about the problem with different ideas, and our thoughts can end up in expected places.
⑦Both the silent and loud self-talk are good for our thinking. Those words to the self are so much more than meaningless chat.
