Miguel opened the door to his grandpa’s shoe shop. “Hi, Grandpa!” Miguel said.
Grandpa was tracing (描摹) a customer’s (顾客的) 1 on paper. He didn’t look up. It seemed Grandpa was 2. Miguel sat down and saw something he loved. It was the candy bottle! Grandpa always gave him a piece of 3 when Miguel helped clean up. Miguel knew he shouldn’t take a candy without asking. But it was his favourite and he was 4 now, so Miguel reached for the candy bottle 5.
Soon the customer left. Miguel walked over to Grandpa. Grandpa looked up from his work and said “hello” to Miguel. “Do you need 6?” Miguel asked.
“Sure! Could you pass me the shoe over there?”
Miguel nodded and reached for an old shoe. “Wow, a big hole on the shoe.”
Grandpa laughed, “It was a smaller one before. But the owner waited 7 he couldn’t wear the shoes. Now it’s much harder to fix. Bad habits are 8 that hole. Better fix them early.”
They kept talking as Grandpa worked. Miguel kept thinking about the candy. When Grandpa finished, Miguel helped him 9 as usual.
Then Grandpa reached for his candy bottle.
“I took one piece of your candy without asking,” he said in a low voice. “My dear grandson,” Grandpa 10, “thank you for saying it out. That is more important than anything else.”
