When was the last time you gave or received a hug? Do your parents hug you before you go to school? In Western countries, it is quite common to greet close friends or relatives with a hug.
You might hug your teammates after winning a basketball game. If your friends are having a bad day, you can hug them to cheer them up. Friends who haven’t seen each other for a long time will usually hug each other when they meet.
Of course, people in different countries have different opinions when it comes to hugging. After coming to China, I’ve noticed that people here are generally more reluctant (不情愿的) to hug than those in my home country, the US.
My Chinese friends told me that hugging is considered to be very intimate (亲密的) in their culture. It usually only happens between people who are really close to each other, like couples. Chinese people don’t usually hug in public, either.
But people’s attitude (态度) towards hugging can also change. I remember watching a video story about a “hugging party” that was held in Shanghai. A local artist held the party, inviting strangers and asking them to hug each other.
The Chinese participants (参与者) clearly looked uncomfortable. However, after the party, several of them changed their mind. They thought that hugging didn’t have to be awkward (令人尴尬的) and could actually be quite nice.
So next time you see your mom and dad, give them a hug.

2.What can you do if your friends are having a bad day?
______________________________
3.How is hugging considered to be in Chinese culture?
______________________________
4.______________________________
5.______________________________
答案: 1. close friends 根据第一段中“In Western countries, it is quite common to greet close friends or relatives with a hug.” 2. I can hug them to cheer them up. 根据第二段中“If your friends are having a bad day, you can hug them to cheer them up.” 3. It’s considered to be very intimate. 根据第四段中“My Chinese friends told me that hugging is considered to be very intimate in their culture.” 4. But people’s attitude towards hugging can also change.
(1)中国人很重视礼仪;
(2)第一次见面需要注意的事项;
Dear Paul,
I glad glad to know that you’re interested in Chinese social manners. ____________
________
________
________
Yours,
Li Hua
One possible version:
Dear Paul,
       I’m glad to know that you’re interested in Chinese social manners. Chinese people pay very much attention to social manners. Let me tell you some of them.
       You are supposed to shake hands when you meet someone for the first time. At the same time you should wear a smile on your face to show your politeness. What’s more, you should bring a gift if you are invited to a party. Be sure to arrive on time or a few minutes earlier. When having meals with others, you shouldn’t point at others with your chopsticks. And don’t make noise when you have your soup. You’d better not leave before the others finish eating.
       I hope the above is helpful. Please feel free to ask for more information.
Yours,
Li Hua
