Have you ever taken a photo with a tiger in a zoo? When you travel around Southeast Asia, are you hoping to ride an elephant? Well, TripAdvisor said this month that they would no longer sell tickets for these kinds of wildlife activities. TripAdvisor is one of the world's busiest travel websites.
The University of Oxford's Wildlife Conservation Research Unit published (出版) a study last year. It said that these activities were bad for animals. When people make elephants carry visitors, they often beat them with sticks (棍子). People also drug (下药) tigers and lions to make them safer for tourists to stay with.
"This animal abuse (虐待) is a hidden by - product (副产品) of the tourism industry (旅游业)," said Steve McIvor, CEO of World Animal Protection. According to the Oxford study, wildlife attractions take up 20 to 40 percent of all tourism worldwide. Up to 6 million people visit these attractions each year. As many as 4 million tourists spend money on these wildlife activities. Without this money, these activities would stop running.
However, the study also found that many of these tourists are actually animal lovers. About 80 percent of them didn't know that these activities weren't good for the animals. Tourists aren't very good at telling whether a wildlife attraction is humane (人道的) or not, said the study.
"That's why it's so important for TripAdvisor to end its sales of the wildlife activities. It sends a message that taking photos with tigers or riding elephants is not something you should do," said McIvor.
