B
A lot of people ask me about my new school. It’s really hard to explain, so I give them an example of one day.
It’s Wednesday morning and it’s time for the weekly school meeting. This week, one of the topics is “wheels”. Kyle, one of the students in our class, suggests a new rule that students bring skateboards, skates and bicycles to school. Our teacher, Mr Jackson, suggests that we can do this one day a week and the whole school votes on a “wheels” day on Fridays.
Here, in Brown’s Free School, we make the decisions! We can decide to go to class, watch TV or play computer games, but most students choose to go to class—it’s more interesting! When we don’t like a class, we can just walk out! At the Free School, there’s no uniform and no exam. We choose what we study and how to study. We can work in groups, or study on our own. If you are at the school and you want to study mechanics(机械), the teachers will help you find a way to study it. If you want to start a new school magazine, you can suggest it to the teachers. Then, they will find a way to help you do it.
That’s how the Free School works. The ideas come from the students and everyone works together to make them happen. It’s a great experience and I love going to the Free School!
