Mian had to travel from Yunnan to Chang'an, the then capital of China. It was a long way. He took good care of the swan because it was a very important gift at that time. So he kept it in a cage to make sure that it wouldn't fly away.
One day, Mian passed by a river. He got down from his horse to drink some water. Then he put a bowl of water in front of the cage, so the swan could drink it. But when he came close to the cage, he found the swan became very dirty during the trip. Its beautiful feathers (羽毛) weren't white any more. Mian carefully let it out of the cage. He brought it over to the river, so he could quickly wash it. However, as soon as he finished washing the swan, it flew away.
Mian tried to catch the swan, but only got a feather. He was very worried. However, he didn't run away. Instead, he decided to tell the emperor what happened. So he continued his trip.
When Mian finally arrived in Chang'an, he met Emperor Taizong and showed him the feather. Everyone was shocked. Mian told the emperor the whole story and said, "The swan feather is light, but it carries the gift-giver's deep respect for you." Emperor Taizong was happy with Mian's honesty and rewarded him.
