In ancient China, bell and drum towers used to play the role of clocks in telling people the time. The bell sounded at dawn(黎明) and drum at dusk. Today, bell and drum towers remain in some time-honoured cities like Beijing and Xi'an. The bell and drum towers in Xi'an are symbols of the city's rich past and are among the largest and best-preserved(保存最完好的) of their kind in China.
The Bell Tower sits at the very centre of Xi'an. It is 36 metres high. It was built in 1384 and moved to its current location in 1582. Four busy roads cross just under the tower. Visitors need to use an underground walkway to reach the tower. Inside the tower, there is a small museum that houses a huge bell as well as some handwritten records on the history of the tower.
The Drum Tower is about 200 metres to the northwest of the Bell Tower. It is a small building. It lies next to a busy street where many restaurants and shops are located. It was built 4 years earlier than the Bell Tower. It is also one of the largest drum towers in China, with a height of 34 metres.
There is a square sitting between the Bell Tower and the Drum Tower. It is the best place to admire the two towers. According to the tourists, the two towers are more impressive in the evening as the lights add beauty to them. Don't miss them when you take a trip to Xi'an!
