1. What was the weather like?
2. What did Cao Cao do when he found the soldiers¹ fewer?
It was really hot. Cao Cao and some soldiers were on the road. They walked for many days.
The soldiers said, “Oh! It's so hot! We feel like baked².” There were no houses. There was no one around. The soldiers couldn't get any water.
A soldier said, “I'm so thirsty. I can't walk anymore.” Then he fell down and couldn't stand up. Cao Cao was worried. He saw fewer and fewer soldiers. He thought, “What can I do? Everyone is falling down before the battle.”
Cao Cao looked around. He wanted to find rivers or lakes, but there was only dry land. There was no water at all.
The soldiers were too thirsty. Cao Cao said, “Let's dig³ a well.” But they dug for a long time and found no water.
Cao Cao thought, “We can't stay here. We must find a way to leave!” He looked at the dry trees. Then he had an idea. He stood on a high place. He pointed forward and shouted, “There is water!”
The soldiers were happy. They quickly got up. Cao Cao said, “There is a big plum forest⁴ not far. There are many big plums. Let's go there to eat plums.”
The soldiers thought about the sour plums. Their mouths were full of saliva⁵. So they didn't feel so thirsty. They walked quickly. After a while, they came to a lake. Finally, everyone could drink as much as they wanted!
