第二节 读后续写(满分 25 分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
When I was eight years old, my seven-year-old cousin Juliana got sick. My brother and I were in the family room watching television when my mum came in to tell us the bad news. I wasn’t really sure what a heart operation meant, but I could tell it wasn’t a good thing. Juliana’s family was on a tight budget, and so was mine. My parents’ faces were full of worry and tears, and that was enough to make me cry too.
When we went to see Juliana in the hospital, was lying in the bed with tubes and other equipment attached to her. It was confusing and scary.
The treatments continued, but Juliana grew weaker and weaker. Every time I visited her, it was hard for me to believe her change. She seemed to lose all her strength and her lovely face turned pale. She lost a lot of weight even though she was given proper food. As a child, I really couldn’t understand what the doctors were doing to her—it seemed like they were making her feel worse.
Seeing my cousin in so much pain made me heart ache. Something needed to be done. I knew I wanted to help her get better faster, but at eight years old, I wasn’t sure how I could make a difference—I just knew I had to do something to help her.
One night after we visited Juliana, on the way home, I couldn’t stop thinking about her. A hospital can be a very scary and cold place. I imagined how lonely Juliana must have felt lying there during the night.
When we got home, I sat down at our kitchen table. I always liked writing stories and drawing pictures, and I started working at it like I had done so many other nights. But this night was different—I was thinking about Juliana. I thought, “Juliana is going to receive rehabilitation training(康复训练), but money is tight. What if I can sell my drawings? Then I can raise money to help her get well faster.” I told my parents what I thought.
They thought it was a wonderful idea, but then we came up with an even better one—
Soon, the cookbooks gave us enough money to cover Juliana’s rehabilitation training.

We would make a cookbook. The very next day, I asked all of our family and friends to send me their favourite food and ways to cook it.
Luckily, everyone jumped at the chance to help. Mum helped to put everything together. Dad typed while I drew the pictures for it. Our idea for a small cookbook quickly grew to over one hundred pages. The local skating club paid for the first printing. We sold almost 300 books in our first week. I couldn’t believe it!
Soon, the cookbooks gave us enough money to cover Juliana’s rehabilitation training.
Whenever I visited the hospital, Juliana thanked me with a smile.
Not only did she thank me in words, but also she made a great effort, carrying out the instructions of her doctor and keeping doing light exercise every day. Soon she regained her strength and recovered. Our stories were shared among other patients. I was really proud that I had tried to make a difference and I made it!
