Read the passage below and choose the best answer to each question.
Marian Bechtel sits at West Palm Beach’s Bar Louie counter by herself, quietly reading her e - book as she waits for her salad. Lunch is Bechtel’s “me time”. But although she’s sitting by herself, she joins more and more Americans in preferring to dine alone.
A recent study found that 46% of meals were eaten alone in America. More than half (53%) of those questioned had breakfast alone, and nearly half (46%) had lunch by themselves. It seemed that only at dinnertime were Americans eating together, with 74% of respondents saying they usually ate dinner with others.
“I prefer to go out and be out. Alone, not together, you know?” Bechtel said, looking up from her e - book. Bechtel, who works in downtown West Palm Beach, has lunch with co - workers sometimes, but like many of us, prefers some quiet time alone. She finds it helps her to feel more energised. “Today, I just wanted some time to myself,” she says.
Just two seats over, Andrew Mazoleny, a local videographer, is finishing his lunch at the bar. He likes that he can sit and check his phone in peace, or for a little social interaction, chat up the bartender, with whom he’s on a first - name basis. “I reflect on how my day’s gone and think about the rest of the week,” he says. “It’s a chance for self - reflection. You return to work recharged and with a plan.”
Dining alone has not always been seen as socially acceptable. There was a time when people may have felt awkward about asking for a table for one, perhaps fearing to be seen as a lonely person without friends. But those days are over now. And besides, sitting alone is different now—we all have our smartphones and online friends to keep us company. “It doesn’t feel as alone as it may have been before all the advances in technology,” says Laurie Demeritt, whose company provided the statistics for the report.
