Read the passage below and choose the best answer to each question.
According to the National Electronic Injury Surveillance System, the number of bites and stings in the US has continued to rise. Therefore, it’s important that we all learn a little bit more about how we can treat bites and stings.
Fleas
Fleas are often found on dogs, but they also sometimes live in grass.
Flea bites feel really itchy (发痒的). Fleas usually bite three or four times, with the bites looking like tiny red bumps.
If a flea bites you, wash your skin with soap and water. Also, apply some cream to help stop the itching. Try not to scratch the bites too much, because they can get infected.
Mosquitoes
Mosquitoes are found in lots of places, and they usually live around people, food, or water.
Mosquitoes can carry diseases like malaria. However, most often, they just bite you, causing a red bump on your skin that itches a lot. Soon the bump will go away, but the itch will remain.
Scratching an itch could make the bite worse. Applying an ice pack to your skin can provide relief from itching. You can also add some baking soda to some water to form a paste that can be applied to the bite.
Spiders
They usually stay in dark, quiet places. They like to spend time under rocks, wood, or leaves. When people frighten them, they bite to protect themselves. Some spider bites might look like a red welt or swelling. You will probably feel an itch or pain around the bite, and in some cases develop a fever.
If a spider bites you, wash the bite with soap and water, and put some ice on it. If possible, take a picture of the spider or try to remember what it looks like—just in case it’s poisonous and you need to be given a cure.
Bees & Wasps
Many flying insects can sting you, like the bee or the wasp. For some people, a sting only creates a burning sensation, but you could also see severe swelling of the bitten area. Wash the area with soap and water, and then place ice on it to reduce the swelling. You can also try applying a small amount of honey or toothpaste to the affected area, and then cover it with a loose bandage for up to an hour. If you experience breathing problems, call an ambulance at once.
