Read the passage below and then complete the tasks.
A liberal arts education (通识教育) is a term and philosophy I learnt more deeply when I attended college.
The theory of a liberal arts education is that students go through four years of focusing on intellectual and personal development, and gaining a broad knowledge of the world. It gives a general introduction to a wide variety of subjects, such as history, literature, and philosophy. After a certain period, students can continue with law, business, or graduate school to get a specific skill or deeper understanding of a subject. It’s a strategy that exposes a student to a wide range of subjects instead of focusing on technical skills. The most important goal is to cultivate a student’s character.
The education I received at college shaped my ability to make choices in the future by developing two essential skills: how to learn things on my own, and how to think critically.
Learning to educate myself was most important. The old Chinese saying is right: it’s better to teach someone how to fish than to give them a fish. The liberal arts curriculum enabled me to seek knowledge outside of the classroom and not be afraid of the unknown. For example, after graduating, someone asked me to work on a magazine. I had no publishing experience, but I did have the confidence to read some books about editing and publishing. As a consequence, I was able to teach myself the basics and take on the work.
Another key aspect of a liberal arts education is that it helps to develop critical thinking. In other words, it teaches you how to analyse contradictory information or views and form your own opinions.
Once you have cultivated both abilities—self learning and critical thinking—you’ll have the best foundation for whatever you choose to do in the future.
