Dong Han, 14, developed a software program to stop people from becoming addicted to computer games. He studies at the Second Middle School of Bazhong City in Sichuan Province. His software program won second prize during a national competition, which was organised by the Ministry of Education.
Dong's software program can help parents control the time of their children using the computer. They can set a certain time. When users run out of time, the computer will automatically (自动地) lock up. Parents can set website black lists and check the browsing history, too.
It took Dong only a week to make it. It was all about programming.
For the past two years, Dong has taught himself the skills in programming by reading books and watching videos. When he ran into problems, he asked for help on a network of software developers in China.
“For Chinese, the biggest challenge is the language,” he said. “Most programming languages are in English. It would be easier if you remember some English keywords first.”
He suggests that beginners start with Visual Basic and Python programming.
Dong knows how to balance study and games. He has often heard parents complain about their children. That's how he got the idea for his award-winning software program.
