Letters play an important role in history. When we write a letter,it is common for us to use an envelope(信封)to protect the letter. But do you know the history of the envelope? In fact, the history of the envelope is probably much longer than you think.
It is believed that the envelope first appeared over 4,000 years ago. However, the early envelope was nothing like what we use today. __1__ After the message was put into it,more clay would be added to the “envelope” to make the message safe. To read the message, one had to break the clay envelope.
The first paper envelope appeared around 1820. It was invented by a British businessman. __2__ They were simply pieces of paper that would be wrapped(包裹)around the letter. Then official paper envelopes were created in 1837. At first, the envelope was made completely by hand. So the process of making an envelope relatively took a lot of time and effort. As the need for the envelope grew, the envelope manufacturing companies could no longer keep up by hand folding and cutting envelopes.
__3__ Edwin Hill invented a machine that could fold and stick paper into the shape of an envelope. This was followed up by the first automatic(自动的)envelope maker invented by Russel Hawes in the 1850s. The machine could produce about 12,500 envelopes every day.
Today, emails and text messages have become more popular than handwritten letters. __4__ They are always part of modern life.
A. It was made from clay and looked like a ball.
B. The early paper envelopes looked very simple.
C. That's why many people couldn't afford the envelope.
D. Later the envelope producing process improved greatly.

1. 第一个空白处,根据后文“After the message was put into it, more clay would be added to the ‘envelope’ to make the message safe.” A“It was made from clay and looked like a ball.”
2. 第二个空白处,根据后文“They were simply pieces of paper that would be wrapped around the letter.” B“The early paper envelopes looked very simple.”
3. 第三个空白处,根据前文“At first, the envelope was made completely by hand. So the process of making an envelope relatively took a lot of time and effort.”以及后文“Edwin Hill invented a machine that could fold and stick paper into the shape of an envelope.” 选项D“Later the envelope producing process improved greatly.”
4. 第四个空白处,根据前文“Today, emails and text messages have become more popular than handwritten letters.”以及后文“They are always part of modern life.” F“However, billions of envelopes are still used around the world every year.”
