A report shows that sales of vegetable seeds on TMall in the
first three months of 2024 grew by two times compared with the
same months in 2023. Sales of things like nutrient-rich soil（营养土）and gardening tools（工具）grew by three times from April of 2023. Of these buyers，most were young people.
Zhang Chao，17，from Anhui，is one young “farmer”. The student said his love for
planting started in the primary school when he lived in the countryside. He learned to grow
vegetables from his grandpa，a real farmer there. Though farming takes hard work，Zhang
said he felt happy when he saw seeds turn into plants.
Now Zhang still keeps his hobby with a balcony garden. He grows strawberries and
tomatoes.“Growing fruits and vegetables not only brings me fresh and delicious food. Also，it
lets me remember the happy times with my grandpa，” said Zhang.
Unlike Zhang，Fang Minke from a school in Shenzhen thinks that planting a garden is a
good way to relax. With lots of schoolwork，the 16-year-old girl sometimes feels stressed（有压力的）. So，she started planting on her balcony in 2023. Most of the seeds were from her
friends. Not knowing what plants the seeds were，she just planted them and waited. After half
a year，her balcony became a small garden，full of different flowers and vegetables.
After she spends long hours on homework，she likes to walk around her balcony garden.
“Seeing the plants and enjoying the fresh air，I feel closer to nature，” Fang said. Planting
vegetables and flowers is now more than just a way to make a living. It also brings joy to
young people's lives.
