One night there flew over the city a little swallow (燕子). His friends had gone away to Egypt (埃及) six weeks before, but he had stayed behind, for he was in love with the most beautiful reed (芦苇). He had met her early in the spring as he was flying down the river after a big yellow moth (蛾), and had been so attracted (吸引) by her slender (纤细的) waist (腰) that he had stopped to talk to her.
“Shall I love you?” said the swallow, who liked to come to the point (谈到正题) at once, and the reed made him a low bow (鞠躬). So he flew round and round her, touching (触碰) the water with his wings (翅膀), and making silver ripples (涟漪). This was his courtship (求偶), and it lasted all through the summer.
“It is a ridiculous (荒唐的) attachment (爱慕),” twittered (鸣啭) the other swallows; “she has no money, and far too many relations (亲戚)”; and indeed the river was quite full (满是……的) of reeds. Then, when the autumn came they all flew away.
After they had gone he felt lonely (孤单的). “Will you come away with me?” he said finally to her. But the reed shook (摇动) her head. She was so attached to (依恋) her home. “You have been trifling with (随便对待) me,” he cried. “I am off to the Pyramids (金字塔). Goodbye!” and he flew away.
All day long he flew, and at nighttime he arrived at the city. “Where shall I put up (投宿)?” he said; “I hope the town has made preparations (准备工作).”
Then he saw the statue on the tall column.
“I will put up there,” he cried; “it is a fine position (位置), with plenty of fresh air.” So he alighted (飞落) just between the feet of the Happy Prince.
“I have a golden bedroom,” he said softly (柔和地) to himself as he looked round, and he prepared to go to sleep; but just as he was putting his head under his wing a large drop of water fell on him. “What a curious (稀奇古怪的) thing!” he cried; “there is not a single (一个也没有) cloud in the sky, the stars are quite clear and bright, and yet it is raining. The climate (气候) in the north of Europe (欧洲) is really dreadful (糟糕透顶的). The reed used to like the rain, but that was merely (只不过) her selfishness (自私).”
Then another drop fell.
“What is the use of a statue if it cannot keep the rain off?” he said. “I must look for a good chimney pot (烟囱管帽),” and he determined (决定) to fly away.
But before he had opened his wings, a third drop fell, and he looked up, and saw — Ah! What did he see?
The eyes of the Happy Prince were filled with tears, and tears were running down his golden cheeks (脸颊). His face was so beautiful in the moonlight (月光) that the little swallow was filled with pity (怜悯).
