High above the city, on a tall column (圆柱), stood the statue (雕像) of the Happy Prince.
He was gilded (给……镀金) all over with thin leaves of fine gold, for eyes he had two bright sapphires (蓝宝石), and a large red ruby (红宝石) glowed (发出柔和稳定的光) on his sword - hilt (剑柄).
He was very much admired (赞美) indeed (确实). “He is as beautiful as a weathercock (风信鸡),” remarked (评论) one of the town councillors (议员) who wished to gain a reputation (名誉) for having artistic (艺术的) tastes; “only not quite so useful,” he added, fearing lest (以免) people should think him unpractical (不切实际的), which he really was not.
“Why can’t you be like the Happy Prince?” asked a sensible (明智的) mother of her little boy who was crying for the moon. “The Happy Prince never dreams of crying for anything.”
“I am glad there is someone in the world who is quite happy,” muttered (嘀咕) a disappointed (失望的) man as he gazed (凝视) at the wonderful statue.
“He looks just like an angel (天使),” said the charity (慈善机构) children in their bright scarlet (鲜红色的) cloaks (斗篷) and their clean white pinafores (无袖连衣裙).
“How do you know?” said the mathematical (数学的) master (大师), “you have never seen one.”
“Ah! But we have, in our dreams,” answered the children. The mathematical master frowned (皱眉) and looked very severe (严厉的), for he did not approve (赞成) of children dreaming.
