Zhang Qian was an early traveller of the
ancient Silk Road. Maybe he was the first man to bring back information about Central Asian lands to China.
In 139 BC, Emperor Wu of Han sent Zhang Qian to Yue-zhi to ask for their help against Xiongnu, because Xiongnu often invaded(侵犯) them. Unluckily, on the way to the Western Regions, the Xiongnu people caught him. Zhang stayed there for about 10 years before he got away. When Zhang finally got to the Yue-zhi people, he was sad to find they didn't want to fight against Xiongnu.
Zhang didn't finish his work and came back in 126 BC, but he learned a lot about the places, people, customs(风俗) and cultures of 36 kingdoms(王国) in the Western Regions.
Later, Emperor Wu of Han sent Zhang to the Western Regions again. Zhang's trip to the Western Regions helped to develop international trade, especially in silk. That's the ancient Silk Road.
