While you eat, you use them to help chop up (切碎) food. When you smile, you show them off to look your best. Sept. 20th is National Teeth Care Day in China. It’s the perfect time for us to learn some tips on how to protect our teeth.
First of all, we need to pick a good toothbrush. Softness is the key. Brushes with hard bristles (刷毛) can hurt your teeth and gums (牙龈). Choose one with soft bristles and rounded ends. Also, a brush with a small head can easily reach all your teeth.
Next, we need to learn the correct way to brush our teeth. The American Dental Association (美国牙医协会) and dentists around the world suggest the Bass brushing technique (巴氏刷牙法).
Charles C Bass (1875 - 1975), an American doctor, invented this method. When Dr Bass was young, he had serious gum disease and was told to get all his teeth pulled out. He didn’t. Instead, he invented the Bass method to save his teeth.
The method suggests brushing your teeth along the gum line at a 45 - degree angle (角度) with very small back - and - forth vibrating motions (颤动). We can effectively (有效率地) clean the area and prevent tooth and gum disease with this method.
After a good brush, you need to floss (用牙线清理) your teeth for a deeper clean. It helps get food out of the space. But don’t move the floss too hard, or it may hurt your gums.
