In the age of the Internet, the idea of going to a public library to borrow a book may seem old - fashioned in many parts of the world.(1) ____________ It is the Czech Republic (捷克共和国).
Libraries are everywhere in the country. In fact, there is one library for every 1,971 Czech people. It is four times as many, relative to population, as the average (平均的) European country, and 10 thousand times as many as United States, which has one for every 19,583 people.
(2) ____________ It’s a long story. In 1919, the government introduced a law to promote (推动) national education in their own language. Every place, from a big city to a tiny village, must have one library. And it worked.
The library law lasted for around 80 years, even in wartime. In 2001, to save money, the requirement was dropped.(3) ____________ Even today, Czech people visit libraries very often.
If you think these libraries are outdated, you are wrong.(4) ____________ Today, they are used as local people’s meeting places. They also hold art exhibitions (展览) and computer classes. But for most Czech people, no matter how the libraries change, their biggest function is still lending books.
