Dai Shifang used to be an easy-going girl, who seldom argued with her parents. But when she became a ninth-grader, things started to change. "We often have arguments, sometimes because of some little things," she said. Maybe Dai has got the "ninth-grade syndrome (综合征)". Some experts think ninth-graders usually experience more difficulties because of the changes in their bodies and minds.
A study shows that the lack of support (缺乏支持) from parents makes things even worse. "The exams in Grade Nine are more difficult. So I'm under great pressure. But my parents don't understand me at all. They seem to only care about my marks in school. They never stop saying how I should study hard," Dai's classmate, Liu Shijia said sadly.
As ninth-graders are in the rebellious phase (叛逆期), they want to be free and have their own ideas. The study shows that about 49 percent of ninth-graders try to make their parents agree with them when they have different ideas. Dai feels this deeply. "I think I am an adult already. I can decide what to do by myself. I can do whatever I want," she said. For example, she thinks there is nothing wrong in playing with boys, but her parents don't agree with her. They are worried that she will fall in love at an early age. So they often argue about that.
An expert from Nantong University gave some useful advice to such ninth-graders. "Parents love their children and they just expect too much from their children. So talk with your parents. Sometimes you may not fully understand each other, but keep trying. Pay more attention to your studies. If you get good grades in exams and go into a great senior high school (高中), your parents will be happy and take pride in you. Learn about the changes in your body and try to accept them. Then you know how to control your feelings," she said.
