Ⅴ. 任务型阅读(1 至 4 每题答案不超过3个词,5题需用完整句子回答)
The Chinese language is different from Western languages. Instead of an alphabet, it uses characters which stand for ideas, objects or actions. Chinese words are formed by putting together different characters. Often, a single character can also make up a word. As one of the oldest characters, Chinese characters play an important role in the development of Chinese culture.
Chinese writing began thousands of years ago. According to an ancient story, it was invented by a man named Cang Jie. One winter day, while he was hunting, he saw the footprints of animals in the snow and found that each shape was different. Then he had the idea that he could use these shapes to stand for different objects. The first Chinese characters were drawings of objects. Some characters have been simplified (简化) and others have been made more difficult over time.
Not all characters were developed from drawings of objects. To express ideas, some characters were made by combining (结合) two or more characters together. Knowing the meanings of these characters can be easy for us. However, one of their disadvantages is that they didn't show how they should be pronounced correctly. Therefore, a method was developed to have one part of a character show its meaning and the other part suggest the pronunciation. Many Chinese characters used today were made this way.
In the 1950s, the Chinese government introduced simplified Chinese characters. This improved people's abilities to read and write. Till now, they have been widely used in China.
