One day in 1903, Edouard Bénédictus, a scientist, climbed high to get something on a high shelf in his lab. He knocked down an empty glass bottle and it dropped to the floor.
Bénédictus climbed down and he found the glass didn’t break into pieces!
One of his students explained he used the glass bottle to hold liquid plastic He had forgotten to wash it. Later the liquid plastic was dry itself. Bénédictus realized the dry plastic could hold the broken glass together.
The same week, Bénédictus read a report about a car accident (事故) in the newspaper. The glass of the car was broken. Suddenly, Bénédictus thought of the broken bottle.
Bénédictus tried to find out the best way to make safety glass for cars. Finally, Bénédictus put some liquid plastic between two pieces of glass and made them stick together. When he hit it, the “glass-and-plastic sandwich” broke, but not into pieces. Bénédictus succeeded. His unexpected invention has brought us many advantages (好处).
16. What was Bénédictus according to the text?
17. Where did Bénédictus cause the small accident?
18. Why didn’t the glass bottle break into pieces according to the text?
