Geppetto lived in a small room. The furniture was simple: an old chair, a poor bed, and a broken table. At the end of the room, there was a fireplace(壁炉) with a lighted fire, but the fire was painted.
As soon as Geppetto reached home, he took his tools and began to work to cut out and model his puppet (木偶). ① “What name shall I give him?” he said to himself. “I’ll call him Pinocchio. This name will bring him good luck. I once knew a whole family. There was Pinocchio the father, Pinocchio the mother, and Pinocchio the children, and all of them did well.”
Having found a name for his puppet, he began to work seriously. And he first made the puppet’s hair, then his forehead(额头), and then his eyes.
After he finished the eyes, he was surprised to find that they moved and looked at him. ② Geppetto said in an angry voice, “Why do you look at me?” No one answered.
③ But as soon as he started to make the nose, it began to grow. And it grew, and grew, and grew. In a few minutes, it became a long nose. Geppetto tried to cut it off, but the more he cut, the longer it became! ④ Geppetto pretended(假装) not to see it and continued his work.
