Sometimes if you don’t think twice about how to spend money, you might run out of money pretty soon. An app like GoHenry can help teach you about spending, saving, and managing(管理) money. But before using that, the first step is finding out what you need, not just what you want.
Needs are things that people cannot live without. Wants are things that would be nice to have, but you can live without them. Unlike needs, your wants will change over time. As a child, you may want a new bike, but when you get a bit older, you’re more likely (可能的) to want a phone, or even a car.
When you have some money, it’s very tempting (诱人的) to spend it all on the things you want. This isn’t a good idea because there’s a risk that you won’t have enough money left to pay for the things you need. And we can’t always have everything we want, at least not right away. That’s why it’s important to try “mindful spending”.
“Mindful spending” means thinking carefully about whether you really need something right now, or whether it would be better to wait or save the money instead. Getting into the habit of doing this now will make it much easier to manage your money. So, from now on, stop and think before you spend.
1 What should you do first before using an app like GoHenry?
A. Collect enough money.
B. Buy all the things you want.
C. Find out what you need.
D. Stop using other such apps.
2 How does the writer show wants will change as time goes by?
A. By listing numbers.
B. By describing a scene.
C. By using an example.
D. By asking questions.
3 Which paragraph tells us the differences between needs and wants?
A. Paragraph 1.
B. Paragraph 2.
C. Paragraph 3.
D. Paragraph 4.
4 According to the passage, which sentence may agree with the writer’s idea?
A. Saving money is better than anything else.
B. Making money is the best way to make you happy.
C. Spending all money on the things you want is a good idea.
D. Thinking carefully before spending money is meaningful.
答案: 1. C 2. C 3. B 4. D

Raisins (葡萄干) are really small, sweet grapes that are dried in the sun. Have you ever wondered how raisins are made?
Grapes only grow in certain parts of the world. This is because ripe(成熟的) grapes need many weeks of hot, rainless weather to dry. They grow in parts of China, Spain and Greece. They also grow well in California, the US. In fact, some valleys(山谷) in California are perfect for making raisins. From August to November, these valleys in California are very hot and dry.
Grapes stay on the vine(葡萄藤) for a long time. When they are ripe, the grapes become sweeter. When the grapes are completely ripe, farmers cut them from the vines and put them in the fields. By doing so, the grapes can stay out in the sun to dry for two or three weeks. The grapes get smaller and lighter as they dry. Now, they are called raisins. Next, farmers put the raisins in boxes and take them to the packing plant.
At the packing plant, workers use special machines to wash the raisins. When they are dry enough, workers start to pack them. It usually takes more than three pounds of grapes to make one pound of raisins.
