三、阅读理解
Ann is a 13-year-old girl. She is studying in Grade 8 in a school. She studied hard both in class and after class, so she was good at all her subjects. However, she didn't like how she looked. She always thought she was too tall and thin, so she wasn't beautiful at all. She also hated to be so shy. How she wished she could communicate with people around her more easily and make more friends than before!
To solve her problems, she decided to ask her mum for help one night before going to bed. Though Mum was very busy as a doctor, she listened to her patiently. She told Ann that her girl was beautiful in her heart forever. Besides, being tall is a good thing, but she thought her daughter needed to be stronger than ever.
After talking with her mum, Ann felt much better than before. She was encouraged to join a sports team at school. Though Ann did not want to do it at first for not believing in herself, she finally agreed to try out(参加选拔赛) for the basketball team she had longed to join since the first day she came to her school.
When Ann got to the large gym in her mum's car as they planned, she looked around with interest. There were many other girls waiting in line. She couldn't help starting to compare herself with them all. It was clear that they were all shorter but stronger than her. However, they all looked more confident(自信的) with smiles on their faces. Every day from morning to afternoon, the coach(教练) asked the girls to shoot and run from time to time, and finally, play a game.
To Ann's own surprise, she didn't realize that she could play basketball so well. Ann made the team and felt more confident about herself from then on.
As we can see, what matters more is not who you are or how you look, but what you can do and what you are good at.
