Sitting near the telephone, Mary looked worried. A wonderful concert would be held at the theater and some pop stars would sing there. She hopes to be a singer and spends much time singing and listening to the tapes and CDs. Of course, she wouldn’t lose a chance. But it was difficult for her to get a ticket. She asked for her friends’ and relatives’ help, but none could do anything useful for her. A classmate told her to go to Jack whose father worked in the theater. She agreed and now she was waiting for his answer. At last the telephone rang. Jack got a more expensive one for her. The girl was very happy. She kept it with great care for four days.
On Saturday evening, Mary had dinner earlier and went out in beautiful clothes. The girl was proud when she saw a lot of people waiting for a ticket outside the theater. She was pleased with her seat though it was upstairs. She could see the singers clearly there. To her worry, a young man came and sat next to her. He was tall and strong, with a flagitious(凶恶的) face. She tried not to look at him. She paid all her attention to the stage.
Soon after the concert started, the young man sang, following the singer on the stage. It made Mary angry. She said, “What a nuisance(讨厌)!”
“You mean I?” the man asked flagitiously.
“Oh, no, Sir, ” the girl said in a hurry, “the singer disturbs me so that I can’t enjoy your wonderful singing voice at all!”
